Top of the Central America small country list, El Salvador, like Belize, get short shrift due to popularity of its neighbors. A reputation for crime and violence has hardly helped, but following the massive destruction of a double earthquake in early 2001, the feeling now is one of intense sympathy. Could there be a better opportunity to reach out and build new bridges? San Salvador normally evokes a love-hate relationship, and if it's the latter in your case, short trips take you quickly to the Izalco and Santa Ana volcanoes, overlooking the beautiful Lago de Coatepeque and close to the Parque Nacional Cerro Verde. With 300 km of coastline in its domain, El Salvador has recently become recognized as something of a hot-spot for surfers. But El Salvador's real attractions lie beyond its beaches: inland, monumental volcanic peaks dot the landscape; the mystifying Montecristo cloud forest captivates visitors; and the ancient Mayan ritual sacrifice site of Tazumal bears testimony to the central significance of El Salvador in a past era.
Nearby, and further west, there are hot springs and countless waterfalls. Northern towns are Mission currently enjoying a cultural revival moving out from the shadows of civil war, with Suchitoto, unmissable rejoicing in its colonial past, leading the way. To the south, long sandy beaches prized by surfers for decades stretch along the Costa del Sol to the Gulf of Fonseca, dotted with islets and bays to explore. To the west are coffee plantations and the beauty of the Ruta de las Flores. And who could resist the draw of a national park called El Imposibie. The mission is yours, should you choose to accept it...
